Lockwood Beck Trout fishery

Thu 19 March 15

I don’t do much fly fishing these days but every time I do get a chance I certainly love every minute of it.

This weekend was no exception, I was fortunate enough to be invited to Lockwood Beck Trout Fishery. The 60 acre venue situated in North Yorkshire near to Whitby is stunning. Run by Gordon Byers for over 15 years it boasts a fantastic stocking of trout to over the 10lb mark and the opportunity to fish from the bank or by boat. They also have a wheel chair friendly boat which can be booked with prior notice.

The venue has plenty of facilities and a wooden lodge where you can get a brew, which can sometime be well-earned after battling with some of the cold winds!

I had the pleasure of fishing with Jeff Metcalfe whom I have met through work. Jeff is a qualified Level 2 Game Angling Coach and has been coaching for quite few years. He has his own website which gives full details of the coaching and guiding he has to offer www.tek2flyfishing.co.uk

I think Jeff anticipated me needing a bit of coaching myself, but turns out my casting is not too bad. Only hooked my back once which I think went unnoticed!!!!

On the day there was a very strong wind pushing across the fishery, pushing into the dam wall, making casting from certain areas impossible. Some people however were having more luck than us, as shown by Simon Purves with a cracking rainbow trout. One of many he managed to catch from the bank!

After a short time battling with the winds and trying a variety of fly patterns with no luck we boarded one of the boats and headed into an area just out of the main wind. This made for a much more comfortable session and gave us the ability to target a much larger area. It was also very nice of Jeff to row me out to the spots (fantastic guiding service!!!). I was glad to be wrapped up pretty warm and pleased I had remembered my Jack Pyke kit which kept the elements at bay.

After a few casts and a number of fly changes we both started to get some interest. It was a Black Fritz that was the winning pattern for me and the fish were following it in and taking right by the side of the boat. They were incredible scraps on the Sonik Sk3 #6/7 rod which I was incredibly impressed with.

Between us in the 2 hours on the boat we managed a number of fish. I sadly lost a possible 5lb fish which spectacularly launched itself out of the water numerous times before sadly throwing the hook. I did however get to take home a fine 2.5lb fish perfect for a meal for two!!!

I am looking forward to supporting Jeff at Lockwood Beck this year with the Junior Club. There are a number of events running, some to junior members and others open to the general public.

Lockwood Beck is also a Trout Masters Water so if competition fishing is your thing then this fishery would certainly be a winner for fish and scenery.
