Baitcraft Super "K" Range

Baitcraft are a name that most anglers will have heard of but maybe not got round to trying any products in the company's portfolio. The man behind the company, Mark McKenna, has been angling for over 24 years and has personally caught carp to 47lb as well as being the current Bream British record holder with a huge fish of 22lb 9oz from Ferry Lagoon on the Fen Drayton complex.

Mark put a lot of time into researching the science behind putting together an effective bait, and countless time into perfecting a food source that was instantly effective, nutritionally beneficial to the fish and most importantly, the fish readily accepted time and time again.

Baitcraft have now bought a new bait to the market in the Super "K", which during testing (and is still in the fieldtesting stages according to the Baitcraft website) has proved to be as effective as, and in some cases, more effective than the T1.

The Super "K" looks like a natural coloured bait in the bag with a slight orange/red undertone. At first glance in the water they could be mistaken for a washed out T1 but it is evident upon smell and taste that they are not. The aroma of the Super "K" is again, a hard one to put your finger on, but to my nose, the Super "K" smells of a mixture between chicken, eastern spices and fishmeal.

Upon breaking open one of the baits, you can see that the mix is of a good consistency and that the "skin" is not very thick, so will allow the attractors to leak out effectively in all water temperatures without breaking down too quickly. Looking at the broken bait, it is noticable that there is some content of what looks like fishmeal as well as obviously other ingredients which are impossible to make out just by looking at them (it would not be fair to ask Baitcraft to disclose the exact make-up of the baits).

UKMA had been feeding the Super "K" baits into a local water regularly, but have been unable to actually get a baited hook into the water to use them properly due to the phenomenon that the UK is not familiar with called 5" of ice covering the lake!!! The Super "K" is a bait that I would be confident in using in all seasons (when possible to wet a line).

As with the other baits in the Baitcraft range, the Super "K" baits are not just available in boilie form, and a range of supplementary products to give a full bait system is available.

Pellets are also available to match the boilies, and are of a low-mid oil type. The pellets have a breakdown time of around 2 hours on average (in room temperature water) and during the testing, when we placed some in a glass, the water had taken on the colour of the pellets and that the water smelt faintly of the attractors and flavours, which shows that the attractors are water soluble and will attract any fish that are around area.

The pellets are also some of the most uniform pellets I have seen when it comes to shape and size, which will lower the chance of pellets flying everywhere when catapulting them out and also allow neatly tied PVA bags.

Baitcraft have also complimented the rest of the Super "K" range with their blend of attractors and flavours in the "K" Cola bait dip. The "K" Cola has the same aroma as the matching baits but obviously a bit stronger. You can use "K" Cola in PVA bags with confidence as well as it does not melt it - perfect for this time of year with the low water temperature where anglers are looking at holding back on actual food, in favour of single hookbaits with lots of attraction.

The Corker Pop-Ups that finish off the Super "K" range are amongst the most impressive "off the shelf" pop-ups that I have seen (and that is a LOT of pop-ups I have seen and used over the years!). As someone that uses the Chod & Hinged Stiff rigs for most of my angling, a very bouyant pop-up that is not going to waft to the deck after a night submerged is very important to me.

The Super "K" pop-ups contain a good quantity of cork granules and dust added to the base mix and attractors, before being rolled into hookbaits. I put an 15mm pop-up into a jug of water (on the kitchen window sill to the disgust of my wife!) attached to a typical Chod rig (Size 5 hook, 2.5" hooklink, size 10 swivel and overweighted with putty), and after 3 days of immersion, the bait was still as bouyant as it was straight out of the tub.

The colour of the Super "K" pop-ups are slightly different to the actual boilies, but this can work to the anglers advantage as the slight difference can make the hookbait stand out as a "target" to the fish.

Even a trimmed pop-up will remain as bouyant as it was before placed in the water as the cork granules will lower the effect of water drawn into the bait.

Each of the Super "K" pop-ups that I took out of the tub where as close to being round as possible which makes them perfect for the anglers that like to fish at long distance.

Final Thoughts

Looking at the bait out of the bag, the Super "K" ticks all the boxes that a good bait should do, and be a long term food source to the fish that should keep them coming back for more of it when they get their heads down. The texture of the Super "K" boilies is spot on in my totally honest opinion, and I cannot wait to actually spend some time behind Super "K" baited rods.

Unfortunately due to the inclement weather that the whole country has suffered from over the past 6 weeks or so, it has been impossible for us to actually put the Super "K" through its paces bankside. As mentioned earlier in the review, we have been baiting a water with the Super "K" when we have been able to and we will continue to do so once it becomes fishable again.

We know that Mark has been hard at work with future baits to add to the range, and if they are anything like the T1 and Super "K" baits that we have seen, then we cannot wait to get our hands on them!
