An Introduction to Casting for Cancer

Casting for Cancer combines the love of fishing with an opportunity to raise money for Orchid, a small but essential charity that pioneers research into male cancers.  Our matches are fun, social events, where the chance to meet new people and have a great weekend take top priority.  In addition there is the chance to win some great prizes from the leading Bait, Tackle and Holiday companies. Joining Casting for Cancer is completely free and painless, just come to one of our events and you'll be hooked!'

A Bit of History

Carping for Cancer was founded by Jason Holt and Andy Gardner in October 2009, in November 2011 we rebranded as Casting for Cancer so we could engage the other discipliunes of fishing  The truth about the creation of Carping for Cancer is perhaps not as noble as you might think........? The pair of us were actually looking for an excuse to get together for an end-of-year session on the bank, and what better reason than to raise some money for charity!  There were seven guys at the first match at Broadlands Lake, Hampshire, including both of us, yet we still managed to raise nearly £2000 for Orchid Male Cancer Appeal.

Our Journey

Our next event took us to Aquatels in Essex, and was populated by a combination of word of mouth, a facebook page, and the beginnings of the Carping for Cancer website.  This time there was more like 30 anglers and we raised the best part of £6000.

2010 continued with a main event at Great Lindford Lakes, this proved to be more challenging to organise, with around 50 anglers over three lakes and someone (Chip 'cough').. had forgotten the peg markers!  Still, a good time was had by all and the first CFC hog roast took place on the Saturday evening.  Again, a significant amount of money was raised and Orchid representative Lucy Dawes joined the team at the end of the week for the presentation of a very large cheque.  2010 was wrapped up with the fourth event at Butterly Res, taking the total amount raised in the first year to just shy of £20,000!

2011 got off to a cracking start with another match at a stunning new venue, Blakemere Lesiure, in March and another £2000 raised.  More and more new members continue to join the cause and the team has just grown and grown.  Summer 2011 was back to Broadlands Lakes in Hampshire where it all began, only this time we took over the whole lake with 40 anglers raising a massive £7500! (and I finally caught my first cfc carp!- Jas)

A return to Aquatels in the Autumn saw another £2000 in the pot and that's where the year was supposed to end...but you all wanted more and we were able to secure the awasome Orchid Lakes in Oxford for an end of year bash in October, tickets sold out in two days and we smashed all the records raising over £9000! Sincerest thanks to Marsh Pratley who was an amazing host and will be a highly resepected patron of CFC for years to come
