Rob has the Edge

UKMA have just received confirmation that Aqua Dynamics MD Rob Johnson has recently landing a stunning big mirror from the small but fish packed Green Acres just on the outskirts of Peterborough in Cambridgeshire. We asked Rob what lead up to the capture of this sort after specimen, here’s what he had to say

"I had met up with Joe Turnbull from carp world to discuss the new bait “The Edge” and basically have a social which we tend to do anyway every couple of months or so. We had booked onto a small lake called Green acres just outside Peterborough. The wind was hacking into the bottom slightly deeper end of the lake so we decided to set up there with the master plan of baiting several margin spots around the lake. The lake was very weedy but after a few exploratory chucks, we managed to find a spot clear enough to place a bait, mine being a rod length of the Reed line. I applied a couple of kilo of “the edge” some hemp pellet etc and awaited some action. The first 36hrs passed with little sign of fish, the margin spots had not been touched either, but JT had found a few fish amongst the weed at the top end of the lake on the back of the wind and so decided to move."

"I was tempted too, but the spot on the reed line was holding me back id just got one of those hunches I guess so I sat on my hands and stuck it out."

"At around 4.30am I had a couple of bleeps from the rod off the reeds the bobbin was tight to the alarm but still in the clip the clutch wasn’t ticking either but I got out the bag in the pouring rain lifted into what I thought at first was a big bream. A slightly disappointing fight ensued I didn’t even bother to put my head torch on as I was convinced it was a bream with some weed round it or something, I could just make out were the fish was by some silk weed around the leader knot pulled it in the direction of the net and in it went. As I lifted the draw cord and spreader block to peer inside my jaw dropped, the net was full alright but not with weed and bream I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw what must have been a forty mirror looking back at me in the moon light."

"The weigh in was 41lb 3oz and JT came round and did the honours with the camera. There was digested “edge “all over the mat it must have been mopping up the bait for a while. Just goes to show sometimes you’ve got to follow that hunch sit on your hands and stick it out, and in future I won’t be quite so quick to make assumptions of what’s on the hook until it’s in the net."
