Fenland Fisheries Management Team Are

Looking To The Future

Over the past few months the management team at Fenland Fisheries have been putting in a lot of thought into what the fishery can offer the visiting angler in the future. With work now complete on the joining together of the already established runs water Vermuyden Lake to the neighbouring small Coppice lake. This gives the Cambridgeshire complex a second water that is more than suitable for the session angler as the lake is now approximately 3 acres in size. Vermuyden Lake already holds an established stock of ghost, common and mirror carp ranging from lower doubles to upper twenties with some very nice tench to fill your time in between the sport the resident carp can offer.

The UKMA team were recently invited down to the Cambridgeshire fishery to see the introduction of twelve stunning mirrors ranging from 18lbs to 25lbs to increase the quality of sport that the new look Vermuyden Lake will offer the visiting angler in the future. All 12 fish that were introduced to the lake have been photographed and digitally tagged, to enable the fishery staff to monitor the growth and keep a constant record of the new stocks development over the coming years. With marginal rushes on virtually every bank, a newly created large shallow plateaus, which is home to lily pads and rushes, Vermuyden Lake has now got the potential to produce fish up to and over 30lbs for the day ticket or over night angler.

The Fishery Management team are also working hard to keep the very popular Willow Lake (home of the Space-Hopper at 44lbs 14oz) in good repair for future visiting session anglers. Regular maintenance of established pegs and with total re-building of some of the more regularly used and abused swims, this well run fishery is well and truly investing in the future. As from the 30th of December 2011 until the 23rd of February 2012, Willow Lake will be closed to the angling public.

UKMA spoke to venues owner Mike Hawes who told us “We have decided to totally close Willow Lake for these two months to complete essential maintenance on the swims and surrounding areas but most importantly to give the resident fish a break from the constant angling pressure”.

Foot Note

Fenland Fisheries are now taking bookings for 2012, please note that Willow Lake will be closed from the 29th May to 11th June 2012, yet again to rest the venue to ease angling pressure (it is nice to see a venue considering the welfare of the fish over making huge profits). Over the next few months, UKMA will be in regular contact with the fishery to keep you up to date with all the latest news from what is arguably one of the best day ticket fishery's in the country.
