Atomic Tackle Bombz Away Lead Clip System

With fish safety paramount in the modern anglers way of pursuing their quarry, the market has been swamped with lead clip systems that all do a similar job and allow the lead to be released should it get snagger with the minimum of resistance. A lot of these systems rely on the angler creating enough security to handle the cast but also to release the lead under minimal pressure. With some anglers going out on the bank without reading the magazines or worrying about dropping too many leads for no reason, a lot of the systems are not suitable for the novice angler to correctly assemble.

Atomic Tackle have looked into this and have come up with an almost foolproof system that has the security on the cast but also drops the lead upon snagging.

The Bombz Away lead clip system moves away slightly from the traditional lead clip that most anglers will be used to using. The main difference is that the Bombz Away clip is of a 3 part main construction. The first part is the swivel housing. This had been designed to take any standard size 8 swivel.
The swivel is placed into the front aperture until it clicks, then a small plastic peg is inserted through a hole in the side to fuly secure the swivel in place. At the rear of the plastic body is the de-facto plastic spigot that the tail rubber slides onto.

Under the main body there is a flattened section which houses a smaller chamber. This chamber is to hold the lead attachment section. The lead attaches via a small "u" shaped wire which has moulded plastic lugs at the end of each upright. The plastic lugs are two different sizes - insert the longer lug first for short/medium range work or insert the smaller lug for extreme range work with leads up to 5oz.

The tail rubbers for the Bombz Away system are unique in that they look like a traditional rubber but have an extension underneath which acts as a plug to stop the lead attachment wire from coming out on the cast. When the tail rubber is pushed on to the spigot of the main body the lower part of the rubber has a small nipple which plugs the lead attachment track.

Even when the rubber is on fully, it takes little pressure to discharge the lead.

Atomic have also constructed a step by step guide to using the Bombz Away system properly:

To make sure that the clips are usable straight away, the complete system is supplied in one package with 5 bodies, 5 tail rubbers, 15 attachment wires and 10 swivel plugs. The system is available in either a translucent camo green or silt brown.

Final Thoughts

What Atomic Tackle have done with the Bombz Away system is remarkable, as short of using glue on the tail rubber or lead wire track, there is no way of assembling this system in a way that would make it dangerous. I have sat and tried to make the system unsafe and failed miserably every time on the bench. I don't use a lot of lead clips in my angling as 95% of my work is done with rotary rigs, but I will definately be putting these to good use on weedy waters where everything is enclosed in a solid bag and dropping the lead is paramount.

A fantastic bit of kit with fish safety in mind before anything else. Highly recommended to give these a try if the shop you use stocks them.
