JRC 3D Box 5 Season

Sleeping Bag.

To be fair, there is only so much you can write about a sleeping bag, before drawing to a conclusion which states either good or bad; this is a good one!

JRC has a deserved reputation for top quality products and the 5 season 3D box bag fits very snugly within that context. Based around a design originally used for protection from the elements when mountaineering, the 3D box bag has been specifically adapted for the angling consumer, and it works extremely well. High side walls produce the ‘box’ effect to give added room without creating a larger, bulkier sleeping bag; this means that comfort is much improved and body temperature much easier to regulate.

Constructed of high grade poly cotton, the outer layer is water resistant and the inner is smooth which helps the user to exit the bag in a rush as it clothing, buttons or toggles don’t get caught up in any fleecy fibres! Between the two layers, synthetic stuffing (Insufil) forms a thermal barrier effective down to -20 degrees centigrade to protect the angler in wintery conditions.
Another feature which helps easy exit is the full length SBS zip which runs down both sides of the bag; baffled and backed to stop heat loss through the zip area, it also stops them catching or snagging when unzipped in a hurry; nothing worse than being trapped in the bag unable to get to your rods as a fish roars off and the alarms are screaming!!! Zip seams have Velcro tabs to prevent any slippage as you sleep and ensure you stay nice and snug!

It is a BIG bag; with dimensions of 230x94cm (approx), so there is plenty of space for the fully dressed larger frame, even room for the wife if required. JRC have added the usual well stitched anti-twist strap on the back of the sleeping bag to help keep it in place on the bedchair, and a ‘hood’ at both ends enable it to be slipped over the ends of the bedchair to keep it securely in position. I have to point out that it may not be possible to secure it over the ends of some of the ‘extra wide’ bedchairs currently on the market. A supplementary extra I particularly liked was the integral pillow which can be removed for washing before being replaced back in the bag; a nice touch which removed the need to buy expensive replacements.

The 5 season 3D box bag comes supplied in a stuff sack, which whilst not my favourite method of packing away (I would prefer to wrestle an upset crocodile; I just have a thing about stuff sacks!!) it does mean that the bag takes up minimal room and makes it very easy to store. The whole system weighs around 11lbs or 5kg, so it’s not excessively heavy when carried over any distance, especially on any kind of barrow, so is a great asset to any long stay angler and is definitely recommended.
