Ready Tied Chod Rigs

Arguably the most used rig for anglers nowadays, is the Chod rig, and with so many anglers struggling to tie the rig correctly, it was only a matter of time before ready tied versions became available. Although Korda are not the first company to bring a ready tied chod rig to the tackle shop shelves, they are the first company to bring different length versions to the masses.

When it comes to fishing the chod rig, there are several key points to look at: keeping the "D" in line with the hook shank, making sure that the hooklink material can be curved easily, and making sure that the correct length of rig is used for the substrate fishing over and rig components used to suit. Most anglers will tend to fish with a leadcore leader given the choice, but if used over a hard bottom or if fishery rules do not allow the use of a leader and a "naked chod" setup is required, a traditional length chod rig of 2-3" may cause the bait to sit too high off the deck and cause the fish to spook or be wary of the tempting morsel of bait floating above the "dinner plate". With this in mind, Korda have decided to supply two length's of ready tied chod rig; long and short. The long chod rigs are suited for fishing over actual "chod" or weed using leadcore as the rig was originally designed for as the rig will be pulled down into the debris slightly leaving the hookbait standing up out of it. The short chod rigs are perfect for use over clean bottoms or as the hooklink section of a stiff hinged rig.

Tied using Korda's established rig components, the chod rigs have been constructed to a very high standard indeed, and are arguably better tied than most anglers could dream of doing! Each of the rigs is tied using the Whipping Knot which Danny Fairbrass has publicised a lot on the DVD's and Thinking Tackle programs (a knot that a lot of anglers find very difficult to tie - including myself!) at the hook end, with a "D" created using the tag end. Inside the "D" is a Korda Rig Ring which is used to tie the pop-up hookbait on to using floss. The hooklink material used is the superb Korda Mouth Trap, which is arguably the most user friendly stiff rig material, and allows the angler to create their own desired curve, without losing rigidity. Finally, a size 11 ring swivel terminates the rig for attachment to the main line or leader. The ring swivel is tied using a 2 turn half blood knot which has also been blobbed neatly to remove any shadow of doubt of the knot coming undone.

During some tests, I found that a 12mm CC Moore Hellraiser popup was of perfect bouyancy to use with the rigs in size 12 to 8 inclusive without the need for any putty on the swivel barrel, and held the hook up proud on the Mouth Trap material with just the swivel needed to counterbalance. Perfect for those that like to fish the "Naked Chod". The slghest waft of a finger above the hookbait caused the rig to come up off the bottom, and if it was a fish's mouth, the rig would have flown back as far as it could go! This was the same with both the long and the short versions of the rig.

The range of chod rigs from Korda are supplied in packets of three rigs in sizes 12 to 4 in both barbed and barbless forms, in both long and short lengths!!! A massive range of choice for the angler given the size of hookbaits that they might use and variety of fisheries visited.

The Korda Ready Tied Chod Rigs have a RRP of £4.99 per packet of three hooklinks.

Even though I prefer to tie my own rigs, I will be keeping a few packs of these in my bag as back up.
