Korda Developments "Sinkers"
RRP £1.99
When UKMA saw the Korda Tackle & Tips DVD volume 2 last year, the product that stood out the most too us were the Sinkers, and we immediately set out to the shops to try to find them. At the time, the Sinkers were not on the market, but as soon as they were we had them in our pouches to try out.
Most anglers have used putty moulded around the hooklink to sink it properly only to find that it has come off on the cast or on the retrieve when bought through weed. This can start to get expensive over the course of a season in lost putty. Cold weather also made using putty far more difficult than it should have been due to the putty hardening in the cold. A lighter could be used to warm the putty up, but this meant spending time, putting the putty onto the hooklink and tricky in the dark.
Sinkers are a unique item that makes a job that anglers hate doing on the bank, so much easier. Sinkers are small pieces of tungsten impregnated rubber (shaped like mouse droppings) that are similar to the rubber float stops that anglers have been using for years. The Sinkers are supplied on loops of wire which are attached to a round plastic tag (for grip). To put onto the hooklink or mainline, it is a simple task of putting the hooklink or line through the wire loop and sliding the Sinker onto the line before pulling the line through the Sinker itself. The tungsten impregnated rubber grips tightly to all but the very finest of lines and can be moved easily when moistened. The grip of the Sinker means that it will not fall off or move on the cast, and if the rig is pulled back through dense weed, the Sinker simply slides down to the hook and can be placed back into the correct position prior to casting back out again.
Using the Sinkers just to weigh down hooklinks is not the only job that they can be used for. I have used them when fishing a "naked" Chod rig directly on the mainline. With 2 of the Sinkers placed on to the mainline prior to tying the lead on, small rubber beads can be then slid over the Sinkers and held in place with the knowledge that the beads can slide off the Sinker easily should they recieve moderate pressure. The Sinkers also help to keep the Chod rig down with less putty placed around the swivel due to the tungsten element of the product. We have also used the larger Sinkers on the hair in place of a split shot when fishing with a "KD Rig" and a single piece of imitation corn.
Although the Sinkers have been designed as a "use once" product, we have found that both the small and large sizes of the product can be reused with a little bit of care. After a hooklink has been designated to the bin, the Sinkers can be slid off the material and with a bit of care and a fine guage leadcore splicing needle, we have managed to thread them back onto the wire loops. Korda might not appreciate that we are disclosing this, but we have seen that some anglers knock them on various internet forums because of the "one use" nature of the product without even trying them. This makes them even more value for money than they already were. The Sinkers are available in two sizes and in two different colours to blend in with the area you are fishing over.
As anglers we are always looking for the best presentation to our baited rigs, and Sinkers will improve your presentation right from the first cast when using them. There is no doubt about it, that this product will be a permanent addition to our rig making armoury.
