Kryston Score Leadcore Lines

Kryston are well reknowned for their gimmick free nature when it comes to releasing products and the same goes with regards to their Score range of leadcore products.

As regular visitors will know, I use leadcore in around 90% of my angling, and use a variety of brands and types as I don't feel that only one does every job I require it to do.

Kryston manufacture two types of leadcore in the Score range - Score and Score Gold. Both of these leadcores are heavy for the given breaking strain, with the Score Gold being the heaviest of any commercially available leadcore on the market.

Original Score has a breaking strain of 45lb and a slightly thicker inner core than other products of the same breaking strain. This makes it extremely heavy for it's breaking strain. Score Gold however, has a 60lb breaking strain and the inner core of Score Gold is the thickest leadcore that I have encountered in angling. Both Score products have an outer weave constructed of Dyneema and Polyester fibres, giving a tight weave that is resistant to allowing the inner to kink up. The combination of these fibres also allow for the easiest splicing of any leadcore that I have used, especially the Score Gold which is helped having the wider diameter bore when the inner is removed.

The tight outer weave also allows beads to move smoothly under light pressure along the material when wet.

Both Score leadcores sink into silty bottoms with hardly any effort, with Score Gold sinking instantly.

A lot of people may be thinking that the only real use to leadcore is with rotary rigs - which to an extent is true as the hooklink should be able to exit over the end of the leadcore should a crack off or breakage occur, but with Score Gold, a new use has been created in that it makes the perfect weight for freelining with the use of indicators! A length of Score Gold is more than adequate to easily withstand the weight of a light indicator placed on the line without dragging the rig out of the area placed. This is a boon when you may have feeding fish in the area where a normal weighted rig may cause the fish to spook and a traditionally freelined rig having the line hanging in the water.

When Score Gold is used in traditional lengths, it is more resiliant to lifting off the deck under the weight of heavier indicators than traditional lead cores.

Score Gold has the additional weight to hold an ultra bouyant hook bait when used as a Chod rig and allows the angler to use a shorter leader length than using a material of traditional weight. This makes it perfect for long range work as using a shorter non-shock leader will give further distance on the cast as the weight is less spread out and does not sink as quickly when travelling through the air. I have even used Score Gold as short stiff rig booms and cork ball pop-ups without having to add extra weight in putty to the swivel of the soft material.

Kryston also manufacture ready made leaders in both types of Score for those that struggle to splice their own.

SAFETY WARNING - Please do not use any glues on leadcore splices as it will stop the leadcore from contracting onto itself and lower the breaking strain of the splice. Some manufacturers recommend glueing splices for security but in reality it makes the leader more dangerous as the braided outer cannot contract down on itself fully for maximum strength.

Final Thoughts

This may seem like a short review of a product, but in all honesty the Score range speaks volumes for itself. When you pick up a spool of Score, you can feel the extra weight instantly - especially with the Gold varient. The colourations available offer superb camouflage over any substrate it is placed over and breaks up the straight line syndrome that some other leadcores with a more solid colouration that have been designed to be unobtrusive over the substrates the colours have been named after. Score was the first leadcore that I ever used way back when I started out in carp angling and even to this day with all the other types available, it has not lagged behind and does the job as perfectly as it was designed to do upon introduction. As the saying goes "it is hard to improve on perfection" and in total honesty - the Score range is as close to perfection as possible, in my eyes.
