Kryston Styx Rig Glues

Kryston are well reknowned for their gimmick free nature when it comes to releasing products. In the past Kryston have released and discontinued several adhesive products that had been developed specifically for angling, but for 2010 the company has sourced two new glues that anglers will find uses for in their armoury - the Styx Rig Glues.

The range of Styx Rig Glues is made up of two fast drying cyanoacrylate based glues that have been formulated to be of use to the angler rather than a repackaged generic product.

The first of the glues is the Styx Brush On Rig Glue. This adhesive is based around the traditional cyanoacrylate formula but has been formulated so it does not end up becoming a white residue when submerged in water.

The standard Styx glue is supplied in a 10ml bottle with a brush applicator which is a massive bonus for the angler as you are not dealing with rogue drops of glue going everywhere and sticking your fingers to everything other than the items you want to stick together! Using a brush also eliminates the chance of blocked nozzles and literally only applies the amount that you wish to apply - saving you money in not having to buy a new tube of glue every couple of trips!

The low viscosity of the Styx glue allows it to penetrate into porous materials rather than just sit on the surface increasing the bond strength. The standard Styx rig glue is not just limited to rig use but is also perfect for emergency bankside repairs to many products made from plastic, metal, rubber, etc.

The second product in the Styx range, is my personal favourite - the Styx Time Lock Rig Glue.

Styx Time Lock rig glue is a delayed action cyanoacrylate adhesive that has been vulcanised (formulated with a rubber compound to delay the drying time and also eliminate white residue once submerged). The main reason for the rubberising of the glue is to allow the angler a few seconds to move components about if required before the glue sets. The other use is for stiffening braided materials in a similar way to using shrink tubing but obviously is less hassle and less obtrusive than using shrink tube on the eye of the hook to create an angle. It is as easy as brushing on a light coat of Time Lock rig glue onto the section that you wish to stiffen then as it is drying manipulate the section to create the angle required - Simplez! As it is glue, it takes no time at all to reset the section should it be required after landing a fish.

Styx Time Lock is also supplied in a generous 10ml sized bottle and a clog-free neck to the bottle that allows easy removal and replacement of the cap mounted brush.

As you can see from the picture above, Styx Time Lock Rig Glue will still retain the angle created using it, even under the weight of a large hookbait. The picture was taken after being cast out and retrieved several times with a small PVA bag of crumbed bait attached directly onto the hook.

SAFETY WARNING - Please do not use any glues on leadcore splices as it will stop the leadcore from contracting onto itself and lower the breaking strain of the splice. Some manufacturers recommend gluing splicesfor security but in reality it makes the leader more dangerous.

Final Thoughts

I have used various rig glues in the past with mixed results from them manufactured by Kryston and also other manufacturers. After using the Styx rig glues at the weekend on my latest trip out on the bank, I can honestly say that Kryston have got these spot-on - especially the Time Lock. I used the Time Lock glue on some of the companies Super Nova braided material and created short stiff angled sections on my rigs that allowed the hook to turn every time over my hand quicker than the same rig constructed with low diameter shrink tube. As the use of the glue does not increase the diameter of the material by any noticable amount, it does not stand out to anglers that may be watching you if you are succesful on the venues fished (in other words Secret Squirrel has returned!).

Make sure that you get on the Time Lock at the very least as it will change the way you fish without any shadow of a doubt. Once I have run out of Styx, I will be buying some more and that is a definate certainty!
