SCR Products PVA Mesh

PVA mesh has become a staple product of the carp anglers armoury since its introduction many years ago. Over the years we have used probably all of the PVA mesh that has been available over the years, and when a new company comes to our attention, we are happy to take a look and see how the products perform.

SCR Products is the company of female angler, Samantha Collins-Ratcliffe who has built an impressive portfolio of captures and had articles published in most of the carp angling magazines. SCR Products supplied UKMA with their range of PVA Mesh to put through its paces.

In the SCR Products range of PVA Mesh, there are three types; Hex Mesh, Slow Melt and Fast Melt, all of which are made in the UK.

From Left to Right: Fast Melt, Slow Melt and Hex Mesh

The Hex Mesh is designed to be used with the majority of bait that is used with Mesh, and has the largest hole size of the range. The 2.7mm diameter hole allows for faster penetration of water and therefore faster breakdown. The breakdown time of the Hex Mesh is between 30 and 45 seconds on average (dependant on water temperature) and is available in 3 different widths - 36mm (wide), 26mm (medium) and 15mm (thin).

The Slow Melt mesh is different to most mesh on the market in that it has a cotton like feel and is almost impossible to ladder. The thicker material used in the construction of the mesh has a tighter weave that allows smaller baits such as maggots and small pellets to be used without worrying about them escaping before you have had chance to cast out. The construction also allows the mesh to be used in extremely deep water or very warm water temperatures without breaking down during the descent through the water column. This is the mesh to use if you are likely to be pulling back after the cast as the extended breakdown time allows for any slight margin of error. The Slow Melt is also available in three widths; 36mm (standard), 26mm (boilie) and 15mm (skinny).

The Fast Melt micromesh uses the same design principle as the Slow Melt mesh, but utilises a thinner material for those that prefer a faster breakdown. The Fast Melt is perfect for the majority of depths that anglers face and also allows itself to be "glugged" in PVA friendly liquids for additional attraction (glugging the mesh will increase the time that the mesh takes to breakdown). The construction of the mesh also makes the Fat Mesh ladder resistant and capable of the hardest of casts without the hook ripping through the material. Fast Melt is also available in three widths; 36mm (wide), 26mm (medium) and 15mm (thin).

Final Thoughts

The SCR Products range of PVA mesh certainly ticks all the boxes that anglers look for with the material and does what it says "on the tin". The range of widths available allows the angler to choose exactly what type of PVA they require for the given situation faced without having to just make do with what they have in their bag. Breakdown times of the three types of Mesh are within the time limits that I look for when purchasing PVA mesh, and although the tests were carried out in extremely cold conditions, the three meshes broke down totally without any residue left behind.

The pricing of the PVA Mesh is also very competitive in that you get double the amount of a lot of other similar materials for not a lot more money. Starting at £10.00 for 10 metres of mesh on a tube (supplied in a protective outer tube) through to 100 metres for £75.00, meaning that the longer length purchased, the cheaper it becomes.
