Solar Tackle
Unleaded Leader

Sneak Preview

Word has reached the UKMA office about the latest terminal tackle offering from Kent based Solar Tackle. This new leader material is based on the principle of the conventional leadcore leader, with one major difference; the lead has been removed to create a subtle and incredibly strong leader that will blend into the contours of the lake bed perfectly. So we asked Solar Tackle backed Carl Sharp to give you a little insight into this brand new product that will be hitting the shops very soon.

Important Fish Welfare Information

During the video review Carl correctly demonstrates the burning or blobbing of the spliced materials tag ends to add strength and a neat finish to the completed leader. This is a widely used way of finishing of a spliced leader and has proven to be very reliable, especially when using leaders for running rigs. However, when blobbing or gluing the tag ends with the intention of using the leader for Helicopter or chod presentations. It is imperative that all moving components including beads and swivels are tested to ensure that they will easily move up and down the leader and over all knots and spliced ends without snagging.

IF ALL MOVING COMPONENTS ATTACHED TO THE LEADER DO NOT PASS OVER THE TAGGED END ATTACHED TO THE REEL LINE WITHOUT SNAGGING, THEN YOU MUST MAKE ADJUSTMENTS UNTIL THEY DO OR THE RIG IS POTENTIALLY UNSAFE.

The materials used in the manufacture of all leaders are designed with fish welfare at the top of the list. These leader materials such as leadcore are only dangerous to fish when they are not used in the correct way. As a simple guide we have listed the must do checks that are imperative when using these materials. Failure to follow the above guides could lead to fishing with a rig that is unsafe and if you were to lose this rig whilst playing a fish, this could lead to the fish becoming potentially tethered in a snag or weed and even worse cause the fishes death.

Update April 03 2012

To accompany and offer an alternative colour to the sediment black and to assist you in camouflaging your rigs against naturally lighter back drops. Solar Tackle has now released the new Khaki coloured unleaded leader material. It is available in 15lbs and 25lbs on 20m spools, with the 40lbs and 80lbs and all are priced at £10.99. To assist the angler who is new to using this type of material Martin and the team at Solar have designed and released a looped unleaded leader. These are manufactured using the very strong 40lbs unleaded leader and come to you in packs of three (which is perfect for the session angler that uses three rods) and these sell for £6.99 per pack.
