Sufix "Heavy Core Camo"

Leader Material

Anyone that knows me will tell you that I am a staunch advocate of using a leadcore leader for the majority of my angling, and when a new leader material comes into the UKMA office, I am like a "rat up a drainpipe" to get my hands on it to put through its paces.

When Sufix sent up to UKMA some of their Heavy Core Camo leader material to review, I was eager to take a good look at it as I had heard about it, but never seen it in the "flesh" until now. Readers are going to be thinking "how does Heavy Core differ from my favourite leadcore?" and if you have not heard of the product, you are quite correct in asking this question, so I will do my best to explain.

Unlike traditional leadcore leader material which contains a thin extrusion of lead, Sufix have decided with Heavy Core to replace the lead inside the braided outer sheath with a non-toxic metal alloy which is fine in diameter as well as being almost as dense as actual lead. The non-toxic inner is a little stiffer than lead which makes the anti-tangle properties of this material superior to true leadcore. With this in mind, the stiffness of the material means that it may not lay perfectly flat across narrow depressions in the venue substrate like more supple materials might.

Where the Heavy Core really struck me as being fantastic was with the splicing of the material. I cannot ever remember a material of this type being so easy to splice! I have spliced leadcore for years now and even with my favoured materials, it can be a little bit of a struggle to pull the needle and sheath back through, but with Heavy Core it was like a hot knife through butter!

The outer sheath of the material has been designed to have a disrupted design alone its length, which is made up of broken lengths of a sandy colouration which blends into black and back out to the sandy colour again at intervals along the whole 10 metres that is on the spool. This pattern breaks up the long straight line that can occur with this type of material on lighter substrates.

The diameter of the Heavy Core is very thin for the breaking strain which means that it is aso perfect for making up stiff boom sections for combi-link hooklinks and the weight of the core will help to hold a pop-up down without the need for large amounts of putty - if any putty at all.

Overall Sufix Heavy Core has found a place in my tackle box for situations where I require a stiffer heavy material. Heavy Core is available on 10m spools in breaking strains of 25lb, 35lb or 45lb at £7.49 per spool.
