UKMA MATCH BOILIE
HALL OF FAME
After the development and stocking of larger reservoirs in the 90’s, by British Waterways and many other fishery management organisations, a selection of what can only be described as super waters started to appear. As these venues matured and the inevitable growth of the fish took place, the conventional tactics, tackle and bait became unsuitable for the size of the quarry being fished for. To compete on these venues scaled down specimen tactics, tackle and baits became the norm.
With the method feeder, baggin' waggler and straight lead replacing conventional match approaches like pole and feeder tactics. To aid these new tactics, match anglers started looking at the specimen world’s vast array of baits, in particular boilies. In the late 90’s on many of the countries top bagging venues like Drayton, Clattercote and Boddington Reservoirs, the majority of matches where being won by anglers using 10mm boilies. The flavours and colours were something that many anglers laughed at in the early days but they soon lived to regret it. So with Orange Tutti Frutti, White Chocolate and Yellow Pineapple all finding there way into the bagging anglers bait bag, a new era in match baits had arrived.
By 2004 nearly all the main stream bait companies had got their teeth well and truly into the match boilie industry with numerous companies now producing boilies in sizes from 6mm to 10mm in every flavour and colour you could imagine, this gave many an angler, myself included, a new predicament - which ones actually work? Over the last 5 to 6 years, I have virtually tried every colour and flavour, by every manufacturer, sourcing the boilie for all seasons but this was an impossible task. However over this period I did find a selection of companies whose products continuously produced the goods year after year and in all seasons. So here they are, the boilies that have through years of success on too many venues to mention, earned their rightful place in the prestigious UKMA MATCH BOILIE HALL OF FAME.
NASH Fish Frenzy Boilies rrp £2.99
Size – 10mm
Qty – 200gms
Classic Flavours
Pineapple Frenzy - Proven as the perfect single hook bait in cold clear water conditions when highly visible bait can entice a fish to feed when more natural colours would not work. Having now used Yellow Pineapple as my coldwater boilie for over 7 years, I can honestly say that I have caught fish on this bait in both match and specimens situations, when other baits simply wont wok, a must have bait for the coldwater match angler.
Tutti Frutti Frenzy – These bright orange baits found favour as the chosen hook bait of the hordes of anglers who regularly migrated to baggin' waggler mecca Drayton Reservoir in the mid to late nineties. This boilie was one of the original specimen baits that crossed over to the carp match scene and instantly produced numerous huge weights for anglers of all abilities and still has a regular place in the carp match angler’s arsenal today.
Highly Recommended
Carp Pellet Frenzy -. The Carp Pellet Frenzy Boilie is simply a combination of fish meals that are commonly used in the manufacture of carp pellets. Designed as an instant bait for short sessions it has already produced superb results on numerous day ticket water. If you fish the method feeder and have followed the current trend of using soaked carp pellets rather than conventional ground baits, then this is a boilie that should not be ignore.
RICHWORTH Midi Handy Pack rrp £4.99
Size: 10mm
Qty: 1kg
Hawaiian Pineapple –When the temperatures plummet, high attractant baits are required that are both easy to see and release an instant aroma into your swim that will hopefully stimulate a take from a fish that is not particularly interested in feeding. The Hawaiian Pineapple from Richworth has a very strong, citrus aroma, that when combined with it’s bright yellow colouration creates a hook bait that will stand out against any type of bottom debris that mother nature can produce.
Cranberry – Over a 2 to 3 year period, I noticed a trend that from late August, up to the middle of autumn, I caught more carp on berry flavoured boilies than any other. I put this down to the simple fact that most waterside vegetation would be depositing berries of one flavour or another into the water course, creating a natural seasonal food source. After trying numerous different flavours, I found the Cranbury from Richworth consistently produced fish when other baits failed.
Highly Recommended
KG – 1 - This natural coloured boilie has a pungent fish meal aroma that simply catches fish and a lot of them. The first time I used the KG-1 was August of 2008 at Biggin Lake near Oundle in Northamptonshire, over a 12 hour session I landed a staggering 62 carp, including 3 x twenties and 37 doubles, finally weighing in well over 600lb of fish, was it the KG-1 that made the difference? That I will never know but it didn’t do any harm, a great boilie.
