Garbolino Sensas CIPS Rules league

The first ice of the winter greeted half the anglers at Barston on the latest round of the Garbolino Sensas CIPS rules league as all the golf course side of the lake was frozen up to 25m out! The signs were ominous but despite this there were still lots of fish caught around the lake apart from a couple of poor areas.

Danny Ashington must think its easy fishing against the UK’s best float only anglers as the Kamasan Starlets Green man recorded his second successive victory in this league! Drawn on peg 26 on the river bank Danny opted for an initial waggler approach and caught a couple of decent skimmers on bunches of bloodworm over a few balls of fishmeal. Later in the match his pole line came good as he added another 8 decent skimmers to his tally on the same bait for 21lb’s 4oz and another big pay day.

2nd overall was Lee Trevitt of Thatchers from peg 61. Lee had a fantastic bag of almost all roach except 4 skimmers on the pole and bloodworm. Dan Varney (Drennan Banbury Gunsmiths) came from nowhere at the end to land 8 quick skimmers on pole and bloodworm from peg 32 for 19lb’s 10oz. Graham Welton from RAF took 4th with 15lb 14oz.

Thatchers led the team stakes on the day with an impressive score of 15 points, with Daiwa Dorking Black 2nd with 22 and Kamasan Super Starlets 3rd.

Competitors fishing the final round of the Garbolino Sensas CIPS rules league were faced with extraordinary conditions for February. A flat calm blazing hot day made conditions pleasant for the anglers but probably confused the fish! Drawn on peg 47 on the new Hempstead Bend Garbolino backed Kamasan Starlets man Darren Cox improved on his 3rd place in the practice match the week before and made the most of a good draw. Darren fed 12 balls at the start at 30m on a slider line and after 1 ½ hours went on it to find the bream and skimmers settled nicely. Alternating between double red maggot or redworm/red maggot cocktail he kept the odd big bream up to 4lb coming amongst a lovely net of skimmers to finish well clear of a class field with 23lb’s 9oz. Dorking man Callum Dicks took advantage of an end peg through the new bridge to finish 2nd overall with 14lb’s 12oz of skimmers and bream. Callum caught on the pole and red maggot over groundbait. Another up and coming star filled third spot, Kamasan Starlets Cam Hughes had 13lb’s 3oz of skimmers and bream on the slider and red maggot.

Team winners on the day were Garbolino RAF who have made an impact in their first year in the league. This was enough to also give them 4th in the final league standings.

Diawa Dorking Black did enough to hold on to their lead and finished with a credible 72 points, 5 clear of Kamasan Super Starlets who edged out their ‘green’ team mates into third overall.
