Wynnick Sets The Record Straight

With a Huge 5 Hour Bream Haul

London based matchman Tony Wynnick is no stranger to producing huge weights of carp from commercial fisheries in match fishing situations. For some years now, The Bag’Em, Tuberrtini backed rod has built a solid reputation for consistently producing huge winning weights on venues all over the country. So it came as no surprise when UKMA found out that he had recently won a 20 peg open with 183lbs, until we found out that the haul consisted of nothing but bream.

Not only did Tony’s impressive 35 bream haul smash the existing 5 hour Marsworth lake record on the superb Tring Reservoir complex by 20lbs but according to our research and records, this is the biggest recorded haul of bream in 5 hours from English waters in the past 25 years. Huge bream weight in matches were common place from mainland Europe and Southern Ireland in the eighties and nineties but all bream, 5 hour match weights of this magnitude just don’t happen anymore.

Tony drew peg 2 in the rushes and took advantage of the strong head wind, he fished an open end cage feeder at range using Bag’em Matchbaits XP Xpanda groundbait and micro pellet to hold the huge shoal in his swim and to attract the fish to his white chocolate and sweetcorn cocktail hook bait, presented on a hair rig. Tony started his session on an 18inch hooklength but as soon as he realised that the fish were feeding confidently, he then changed to a shorter 12 inch hooklength which did the damage.

UKMA asked Tony how he approached the match, here’s what he had to say. “We got the “All in” at 10.00am and I started of by casting out a big feeder for 35 minute to get the fish interested but I had no fish in the first hour. Just after 11.00 I landed my first bream of just over 5lbs and by 12.00 I had 7 bream in the net. The third hour of the match was a real confidence builder with another 10 good stamp fish sliding over the net putting me in a very positive position after three hours with 17 fish in the net that were all over 5lbs.

Over the next 45 minutes I landed a further 6 fish to take my tally up to 23, so at this point I decided to top up my swim again by adding another15 big feeders of micro pellet and groundbait over a five minute period, just to keep the shoal interested and confidently feeding. I recast and over the next hour and 10 minutes I managed to land another12 bream before the “All Out” and I finished the match with 183lbs, which turned out to be my biggest ever haul of bream, I was over the moon”.
