2009 UKMatchAngler.com Charity Match
After last years resounding success in raising funds for the chosen charities, UKMA chose to repeat the match again for 2009, to support the good work carried out by the organisations. UKMA booked 60 pegs on British Waterways Boddington Reservoir, and we were hoping for a sell out as per last year’s event. Out of those that booked in, we were saddened to only have 46 anglers turn up at the draw. The match itself was fished from 1030 through to 1530, so to give everyone sufficient time to tackle up and sort themselves out. Due to the weather conditions being a nice sunny day with a moderate wind, the sailing club that also use the reservoir were out in force, which did cause some problems for some anglers with regards to how close to the bank some of the boats were coming. Obviously everyone has a right to use the water as much as the anglers do, but we feel that the boats should keep a further distance from the banks that anglers are using.
Almost every angler started using the Method, and for most of the field, it was a slow day to start off with. The odd fish was being picked off early on by anglers in the higher numbers, but this was not to continue. With very few fish coming regularly to most anglers, it was turning into a hard day, but those that sussed out that the further they could put a Method feeder out into the lake, the better the chances of getting a bite became. During the course of the day, it looked as if Martin Paynter on peg 69, was going to cruise the match as he was getting action more regularly than other anglers along the match length. There was numerous different numbers of fish allocated to him by those on the bank, with numbers caught ranging from 4 carp through to 15 carp at one point during the day, but at the weigh-in, there was a little bit of over-estimation involved. Lee Taylor (Greys/Bag’Em Baits), on peg 98, was also getting regular action from the reservoirs stocks using the Method and it looked as if it was going to be a close call between Martin and himself for the honours up until around three quarters duration of the match.
In the last hour and a half, it seemed as if a switch had been thrown, as anglers started to get bites all of a sudden. Alas it was still far from the “bagging up” which Boddington Reservoir is known for. At the final hooter, it was unknown exactly where the winner had come from as some of the anglers had caught the same amount of fish late on as others had done steadily through out the duration of the match. With most anglers that weighed in, putting close weights on the scales, it was still between 7 or 8 anglers to whom the honours went.

Back at the pub afterwards, a raffle was held with some superb prizes, kindly donated by various tackle companies, ranging from bait parcels and magazine subscriptions, through to top of the range rods. It was superb to see the anglers in attendance dipping deep into their pockets and buying plenty of raffle tickets with the chance of walking away with a £100+ rod or box of bait.
