ULTRA FISHING TACKLE Ltd

After browsing through one of the many trade mags that come through the door, I read a feature about Ultra Floats. To my amazement this company have been producing floats for over half a century and the companies CV just oozes angling history. The companies original floats were designed by former angling world champion Billy Lane, whose pioneering designs, were the foundation of modern day float manufacturing.

The Company these days is a far more state of the art affair with their high quality floats still being produced and manufactured with in the UK (yes British built floats) To compliment Ultra range of floats they also distribute the Polaris range of products and a the Kombat range of rods and poles, which are all superb value for money. So here is the second set of samples from the huge range of products that have been sent to us for review the Ultra Kombat Carp Waggler Float range.

Ultra Loaded Pellet Waggler (#1)
With the Pellet Waggler being the chosen method for a lot of anglers nowadays on commercial fisheries all over the country, the size of the floats means that large split shot or specialist adaptors are required to lock the float in position on the line. The trouble with using large split shot is that they can damage the main line, especially if the angler chooses to use a hi-tech low diameter monofilament. With the loading built in to the float itself, the requirements for such large weights on the line is removed and the float caneasily be used within a running loop setup. The line attaches to the float via a swivel eye which can be unscrewed from the loading to quickly and easily change the size of float should the fish move further out or closer in. The screw attachment also means that a change from the Pellet Waggler to a Splasher Waggler (#3) can be made within seconds should the requirement arise. The Loaded Pellet Wagglers are constructed from a high grade balsa and have been finished in with a top quality paint.

Sizes Available - 4 Gram, 6 Gram & 8 Gram Loadings

Ultra Kombat Pellet Waggler(#2)
Incoroporating the same finish as the Loaded Pellet Wagglers, the standard Pellet Wagglers are unloaded and can be used with large split shot or specialist loaded Pellet Waggler adaptors. Made from a slightly thinner diameter balsa than its loaded counterparts, these floats are perfect for both commercial fishery use as well as used on running water dragging a large bait overdepth (which was the original use that these floats where designed for). An eyed plastic peg is fitted to the base of the float and can be used with the line running directly through the eye, or pushed into a silicone float adaptor to allow quick change of the float shoudl the need arise as well as a clean strike.

Sizes Available - 3AAA, 4AAA, 2.5SSG, 3SSG & 3.5SSG

Ultra Carp Splasher (#3)
The Carp Splasher is a float that is dedicated specifically to one situation - where the fish are feeding up in the water and are coming to the sound of groundbait or stickymag balls hitting the surface at range. The bulbous body at the base of the float as well as at the end of the sight bob, stops the float from diving under the water too far and also acts as resistance when a fish takes the bait making this pattern perfect for self-hooking situations.

Sizes Available - 10 Gram, 15 Gram & 20 Gram

Ultra Kombat Carp Waggler (#4)
This thick balsa waggler is longer than the unloaded pellet wagglers available and also thinner in diameter. These can be used as a pellet waggler should the angler require a longer float to get the line under surface drift, but are designed to be used with larger baits for bigger carp. These floats are perfect for fishing in the margins as the bouyancy of the balsa and thick tip allows the angler to read the float in the water and to determine which are true bites and which are line bites.

Sizes Available - 3AAA, 4AAA 2.5SSG & 3SSG

First Impressions

The Ultra Kombat Carp float range are very well made pieces of tackle. The satin coating does not affect the way the float sits in the water between casts or if the surface is flat calm or heavily rippled, which can occur with a high gloss finish that some manufacturers use. The coating itself is hard wearing and should not come off even after several bagging sessions nor allow water to ingress into the balsa. The plastic pegs used on the unloaded floats are robust enough to handle going through reeds without pulling out or breaking (although if used with a float adaptor they may pull out of the silicone under this type of situation - but all floats will do this).

Ultra Floats have made sure that generous sight tips have been painted onto the floats so that even the anglers with the poorest eyesight should have no trouble seeing the float in the water and larger baits such as corn, boilies or large pellets can be suspended under the float without pulling the tip down too far or completely under the water.

Final Thoughts

On first impressions the range of wagglers from Ultra Floats are of extremely high quality. The brand name may not be the first off of an anglers tongue when they are asked about the floats available, but with the quality and high standard of finish of the floats, the name Ultra Floats will be one that anglers should be looking out for. The selling prices of the floats are less than a lot of the similar products on the tackle shop shelves, and in all honesty, these floats are of as good or higher quality than a lot of the competitors products.

In a financial time as difficult as the one the world is going through at the moment, only a fool or tackle snob would overlook these floats.

Well done Ultra Floats, and I for one cannot wait to put some more of the range through their paces.
