Baden Hall Report
January 2012

The staff at Baden Hall Fishery in Staffordshire, have been in touch to tell us how well the lakes are fishing during the colder months; The team at UKMA stays in touch with many listed fisheries and this allows us to keep you informed so you can find out where the fish are!
Over the last couple of years, Baden Hall has rapidly gained a deserved reputation as a ‘big carp’ water with many stunning carp in excess of 40lbs, including some simply beautiful common carp.

Recent reports confirm that the venue record common in the Quarry Lake (the recognised specimen pool) is now a weighty 41lbs 8ozs and this is backed by lots more mirror carp to 38lbs! The smaller Bridge Pool has revealed carp to 31lbs which are also certainly worth angling for. All lake records have fallen in the later months of 2011, which suggests the fish are still piling on weight. Most effective during the cold weather has been the humble maggot, either on a clip or glued to a cork ball pop up.

It’s not just carp at Baden Hall though; the winter months have seen pike anglers descend on the fishery to take advantage of 24 hour tickets giving access to pike which hit the bank at more than 25lbs. Static deadbaits are accounting for good numbers of fish between 15-23lbs when fished hard on the bottom. There are no day tickets however, and a 24 hour pass costs £30. Fishing is from wooden cabins, and weigh sling, unhooking mat and landing net are provided to ensure fish are properly cared for.

The Main Lake continues to provide good sport to visiting anglers; stocked with carp to 20lbs+, there are a multitude of other worthy targets to try for including roach to 2lbs, perch, big bream and the odd huge chub. Most baits work well, but finer tackle is required to consistently catch during colder weather. An improvement of just one or two degrees in temperatures can really put the carp onto the feed, so make sure you take enough bait! The Main Lake is generally shallow, so fish are often out in the centre where more depth is available, but there are some deep holes close in if you can find them which contain fish.

The canals and match waters are throwing up good match weights; 50lbs+ is often needed to ‘frame’ and nets in excess of 100lbs are regular events on waters computer designed to test the skill of the angler, not the luck of the draw! Usual match tactics apply, paste, pellet, maggots and corn picking off the fish. Clubs can book an open match by calling 01785850313.

2012 will continue to see new stocking, improved product choice in the onsite shop and cafe and further developments at one of Staffordshire’s premier fisheries; you can find out more at www.badenhall.com
