Paul Tames Monster Pike

Peg One consultant Paul Garner is no stranger to big fish and when word reached the UKPA office about him landing a 37lb 5oz. We were in immediately got in touch for the full low down on his days events Caught in 4.5m of water at the bottom of a drop-off. Using a Baitbox whole mini-mackerel fished on size 4 PikePro trebles and 45lb PikePro wire. The tactics that snaffled the beast were a Float ledger rig with a 25gram weight and polystyrene sea float. Above water Paul used the very impressive Nash Entity 12ft 3lb TC rod, with a Shimano Baitrunner 10ooo reel loaded with 15lb Nash bullet line.

Paul explained what happened “I had the Bite was at about 3pm, my only one of the day! The fight was pretty unspectacular. The fish moved away quite steadily and I hit the take straight away. It felt like a reasonable fish, I thought perhaps a mid-double, and the fish came to the side of the boat without too much trouble. I played the fish out keeping her quite deep as I normally do, to stop any thrashing about on the surface, and when she popped up I couldn't believe the size of her. Fortunately, she went into the net first time. Which was probably lucky as the hooks fell out in the net!”
