Team UKMA Member Earns His Stripes

UKMA have just received news of a huge perch caught recently by Team UKMA member Alan Stagg. Alan has provided us with the details of the catch;

"Here are the details of a 5lb 4oz perch I caught recently, I am still a bit blown away by it all to be honest.  It was caught from a small southern stillwater using a large lobworm tipped off with an Enterprise tackle imitation buoyant worm to balance it." 

"I had dropped a couple of tickets this winter to save some money to allow for the long drives back and forth to the venue (3 and a half hour round trip), really planning to fish it all winter in the hope of catching a good perch.  I fished the venue three times last winter and was lucky enough to land fish to just over 4lbs but went a step further and managed the five pound fish on my first trip to the venue this winter.  I also managed a smaller fish an hour before weighing 2lb 6oz."

"At the start of the session I introduced a quarter of a kilo of mixed size worms which were finely chopped.  To this I added a handful of casters which I crushed and a good sprinkling of dead red maggots.  The feed was introduced accurately by a bait dropper and the swim left to rest for a couple of hours before fishing." 

"The session started off with not the best conditions for perch, it was quite bright.  However, in the early afternoon it started to cloud over and light drizzle started to fall.  It was on this weather change that I received the first bite resulting in the smaller of the two fish.  An hour later and I received a slow yet confident lift on my light bobbins.  The fish didn’t feel particularly big at first, not much difference than the first until it came close into the bank.  When it surfaced I thought it might be a ‘four’.  On placing the fish on the mat I couldn’t believe the width of it."

Alan used the following tackle to capture the fish – Korum Precision Multi Feeder rod, 6lb Hydro Flo mainline, 1oz lead, 12 inches of 5.5lb Mirage fluorocarbon hook length and a size 8 Wide Gape Talon Tip hook.
