Carver 101 Crankin Baitcasting Reel
RRP £69.99
The Carver 101, left handed Baitcasting can turn any predator anglers head, with its sleek black semi-matt finish and gold graphics, it certainly looks the part but it doesn’t stop there. This dynamic little work horse runs on a silky smooth gear system which is built around 8 TNS ball bearings + 1 roller bearing making Line retrieval a very efficient affair.
The clutch on the Carver is a star drag with a clicker and it is located on the handle, on the shaft between the handle and the reels body, and very simple to use. After a little practice I was able to make even the smallest of adjustments to the clutch by using the thumb whilst still being able to control the rod and reel proficiently.

The Carver Baitcaster produces a ratio of 6.1 to 1 which is as fast a retrieve as you could have with out affecting the reels power. So with the addition of a double handle to the equation you have a powerful, well balanced Reel, add to this it’s fashionable cool looks , and you have a reel which would grace any Lure anglers Rod.
On The Bank
Now being new to Baitcasting and the relevant tackle, I at first, found the experience of casting a lure out with this tackle as awkward as picking your nose with your big toe. However, after a few blue words and once I got our resident lure expert Mark Brand to show me how to set the casting drag on the Carver, I was sorted.
He simply adjusted the braking system which increases or decreases the amount of torque on the spool. By simply adjusting the six internal Brake Pins, with the rule being the more brakes you engage the more this controls the release of the line on casting, alleviating the bird’s nests I was experiencing on my earlier attempt.
The first time I fitted the Carver in the reel seat on the Luger and securing it in place. I discovered that it has a very low profile, making the set up sit comfortably in my hand, which is a very important factor to lure anglers, who can spend literally hours roving waters in search of there sport.
Final thoughts
All in all a very affordable well balance set up which would suit either the boat or roving lure angler. The Carver 101 and Luger Crankin 7’ make even the hardest of days fishing a pleasure rather than a chore. I advise anyone interested in an all round lure fishing package to seriously consider having a look at these two products, they are simply great fun to use.
