Reuben Heaton
Sportscale Digital Thermometer

We all know that the weather plays a big part in how fish react in the water and where or how they might be feeding on the given day. Water temperature can play a big part with cyprinid species on how they will feed as well as dictating on what baits might be more effective given the water temperatures - especially if the bait contains a non-emulsified oil or oil based attranctants.

With this in mind, anglers are now looking at edges to help them decide on how to approach the session in hand, and the Reuben Heaton Sportscale digital thermometer falls perfectly in to the catergory of a "must have" item for the weather followers.

The Sportscale contains two temperature probes; one is built in to the main body of the product and the second is fixed to a 3 metre long wire which allows for temperatures to be read from areas that the main body would not be readable from. The probes are able to be viewed indepentantly and can be switched from one to the other by the press of a button. The probe on the wire is the external probe which will allow the user to place the probe into the water and get an accurate temperature reading. The digital display show the current temperature as well as the maximum and minimum temperature that has been taken by the given probe whilst it has been on. The display can also be used at night by pressing the "light" button which illuminates the display for several seconds in a blue light.

The Sportscale allows the user to choose which unit of measurement they wish to be displayed and this can be switched easily by pressing the button marked C/F to toggle the unit.

A Reset button is also included to cleat the minimum & maximum temperatures that have been recorded since the unit was switched on.

The ABS plastic casing offers a water resistant package to the main electronics, and on the rear includes a "kick stand" so it can be sat on a bivy table to get an accurate reading at any time.

Final Thoughts

During testing, the Sportscale has been flawless and has worked in all the weather conditions it has been used in. Temperatures have been accurate to other thermoeters of both analogue and digital type, but without going to Weights & Measures to have them checked properly, we can only say that the exact temperatures are not going to be far off what is dsplayed on the screen.

For the angler that likes gadgets or keeps a log of their sessions, the Sportscale is an invaluable item that can be placed in a small pocket of a jacket or bag out of the way until required.

The Sportscale Digital Thermometer has a RRP of £19.95 which includes a compact pouch and a battery!
