Review: Ray Best When Darren Cox at Garbolino gave me this rod to review I was to be honest a little surprised that his chosen rod for review was from the budget end of the market, but that was the first of Many surprises that this Rod had to offer.
The Garbolino Super Feeder 300 10ft comes in a very tidy bag with 3 divisions, 2 for the main rod sections and a 3rd for the tips which are stored in a tube. The rod itself looked very well finished, the slim carbon blank was home to a comfortable screw down EVA winch reel fitting which housed a 5000 size Baitrunner with ease. The butt section was finished of with 1/2 Cork - EVA which makes it very comfortable and the perfect length for casting. The good sized fully lined quality guides throughout made for good line distribution on the cast and the 2 quality Carbon tips that blended into the blank very nicely indeed, I found them to be both very responsive and well made.
The recommended reel lines for this rod are 2 - 6 lb and suitable for hooklength's from 1.5lb - 5lb and will cast weights from 25 - 70g with ease. This rod has the credentials of many rods twice the price and I couldn't wait to give it a go. So of I went to Fields End Water, near Doddington in Cambridgeshire, knowing that if they were in the mood, the resident Carp and Tench would put this rod to the test. I set up a light in line method rig with 6lb reel line. I loaded up the method feeder with 2.3micro pellet, and targeted a shelf at about 45yds out.
The rod handled this distance with utmost ease, at no point did I feel the need to hold back on the cast, I have to say that I was very impressed with the casting action and accuracy that a rod in this price range could supply. After only a minute or so the tip flew round and I was into a good fish, as I got the fish under control this gave me the opportunity to study the action of the rod under pressure, Flawless! not a flat spot on the blank and the rod was bent to the reel. The rod coped with every lunge, charge and trick that this lump had to offer with ease, the more pressure I gave the fish the better the rod felt. After a hard 4 minute battle, a beautiful grey & silver double figure mirror slid into the net, job done! VERDICT This is without question the best sub £50.00 feeder rod I have ever used, for the money I can't fault it. It has the backbone of a Rhino but it still retains a class through action. At no point during testing did I feel the need to be cautious in the way I used the rod, basically I abused this animal and it totally responded, better than many rods at twice the price. If you're an angler on a tight budget or looking for a feeder rod specifically for big fish on small commercial waters or small powerful rivers, you'll have to really shop around to find a rod that's better value for money. |
