Anchor Tackle have been in the angling industry for a long time now and are well known for their top quality angling weights – more specifically their superb non-toxic split shot. But a lot of anglers do not realise that Anchor also do a range of other angling equipment that should not be ignored.

Anchor Rugby Ball Split Shot

Most anglers will at some point in their angling lives used the Anchor Double Cut split shot which is widely regarded as being the best non-toxic split shot available on the market, but Anchor have taken this product one step further and released a range of weights in 1993 that were rugby ball in shape rather than being round (under the ProXS banner but now renamed as Rugby Ball). Some anglers will think that there is no need for this, but here at UKMA we have come up with a number of uses that the rugby ball shot will be of benefit over a round shot.

As a starting point the rugby ball shot will be less likely to slip on the line when attached due to the larger surface area of contact between the weight and the line. This will also cause less chance of damage to fine lines, making them perfect for use as waggler locking shot. Being elongated in shape, they will also cause less drag through the air on the cast, as well as being more streamlined when in the water. Being elongated they are less likely to tangle compared to standard round shot.

One use that we at UKMA have been using these shot for now for a number of years is to weight down pop-up baits. Because the weight is more spread out, it means that a heavier shot can be used to anchor the bait down without affecting the way the bait reacts in the water too much.

We have thought of a number of uses for the Rugby Ball shot, & we are sure that the thinking angler would come up with the same thoughts as us.
Overall, we are very impressed with the Rugby Ball shot & will be using it exclusively from now on.

Anchor also have released a number of imitation baits to the market.

Mimik’s Pellets

We all know how frustrating it can be when using pellets and getting them ready for use on the hook or hair. Yes there are a number of predrilled pellets on the market, but these all break down over time, and rarely are useable more than for one cast. The Mimik’s Pellets from Anchor put paid to that problem in that however long these are left in the water or attacked by smaller fish, the hookbait is going to be in perfect condition every time. A good feature of these pellets, is that one end has been drilled to allow paste to be wrapped around the pellet for additional attraction, without it falling off on the cast, as well as allowing the hair stop to be hidden away inside the bait to stop crayfish from picking the stop out (which they have learnt to do on a lot of waters!). These are perfect for the match angler that fishes the pellet waggler as well.

Available in 4 sizes – 4mm, 6mm, 8mm & 10mm, with varying numbers per packet depending on size chosen, these are going to be a worthwhile inclusion to the anglers bait armoury.

Critical Corn

The Critical Corn is no doubt going to be the most popular of the range, and we can see why. The “corn” has been made so that it is of a neutral buoyancy so that it will react as natural as possible when in the water. The compound that the corn has been made from is of a slightly porous nature, which will allow the angler to glug the hookbaits in the additive of their choice, but they are not so porous that they will take on water. We found that the best way to flavour the corn is to take a piece of the corn and on the cap of the additive used, simply press the corn down into the additive, and release, which makes the bait act like a sponge & soak up the flavouring or additive. Unlike some of the other imitation corn on the market, the Critical Corn is of a flat profile so that it will sit together more naturally upon the hair. We are impressed here at UKMA with this product and will be carrying it in our armoury alongside the other types we also use. Well done Anchor!

The Critical Corn is available in 4 different colours – Natural Yellow, Red, Black & Orange, with each pack containing 15 pieces of the same colour, in various sizes per pack.

Mimik’s Maggots

As maggots are becoming more & more popular as a biog fish bait on the specimen waters, having a bait that is going to be resistant to the smaller fish as well as being as realistic and natural as possible is becoming more and more important. Anchor have released a soft imitation maggot to the market that is simply perfect for the job in hand. The Mimik’s Maggots, are made of a soft compound that like the critical Corn, soak up flavours or additives like a sponge when pressed onto a surface, yet remain perfectly natural in texture and look. The Mimik’s Maggot are perfect for use with all popular was of attaching a maggot as a hookbait, from using maggot clips, hooking them directly on to the hook or threading onto a hair, we found it difficult to determine the real dead maggots from the Mimik’s ones when in the water!

Supplied in packs of 12 maggots and in 3 different colours – Red, White & Bronze, UKMA feel that these should be in every anglers box, especially with the winter fast approaching now.

Mimik’s Worms

Something that most of the imitation bait manufacturers have not included in their ranges are worms. These are probably the most natural bait that the angler actually uses, yet is also very underated. There is not a fish swimming around in our waters that will not pick up a worm, so why not give the angler an imitation version? In each pack of Mimik’s Worms, there are a selection of sizes, but the one that we would be looking to use the most is the large Lobworm imitation that is supplied in the pack. This would be perfect for dropping under a marginal feature for carp on stillwaters when stalking, as well as being entirely perfect for drifting under a weed raft on a river for chub or perch. UKMA are looking forward to being able to put a worm hookbait out at range now on some of the carp waters that we fish, where as before with the real deal, it would have come off on the cast.

Supplied with 5 various sized Worms per pack, these are sure to be flying off the shelves in the tackle shops when thinking anglers get there thinking caps on.

Mimik’s Mixers

A lot of anglers struggle to prepare Mixers for the hook, and although you can glue or drill raw Mixers out for mounting, they soon become soggy and useless on the hook. Imitation Mixers are nothing new to the market, but the Mimik’s Mixers are spot on in our opinion.

They are not as large as some of the other imitation mixers, which mean that they are more the same size as a loose offering. Easily side hooked or mounted on a hair, these will easily withstand the hardest of casts, as well as staying on the hook, saving time rebaiting when the fish are really having it off the top and bites are being missed. In our tank tests, we found that hooks up to a size 6 did not affect the buoyancy of the Mimik’s Mixers as much as some of the others on the market, which means that a larger heavier pattern hook could be used when fishing near to lilly beds or other obstructions.

Supplied with 5 Mimik’s Mixers per packet, these are firmly in the UKMA surface & stalking box.

Mimik’s Casters

Every angler knows that casters are one of the top baits for sorting out the bigger fish in the swim, but using the real deal on the hook requires a fair bit of finesse to stop the casters from bursting when hooked. With more and more carp anglers including casters in their spod mixes, they now can use the Mimik’s Casters on the hair in the same way as maggots can be used without having to worry about the bait bursting. These are sure to go down very well indeed with the tench and bream anglers as well as the thinking carp angler that requires an edge over other anglers on the venues.

Supplied in packs of 16 Mimik’s Casters per packet in various colours (another good idea as not all casters are the same colour), these are sure to be in some of the top specimen anglers armoury in the coming months.

BDS (Bait Delivery System) Leads

We all know how time consuming it can be preparing a PVA bag and then placing the lead inside it before tying it off with PVA string or tape. Well, Anchor have thought about this and launched a range of leads that are specifically designed to carry a PVA bag of bait out however far you can cast, without needing to tie off the bags with knots that can cause globules of partially melted PVA around the rig end.

The BDS range of leads are essentially a standard dumpy style pear lead, but the lead has a groove cut round it. This enables the lead to be placed into the neck of a PVA bag and a rubber O ring rolled down the lead into the groove to trap the bag in place. The BDS leads are available in both inline and swivel versions, and in our tests here, we found that the PVA bag can be filled with the heaviest of baits and swung around our heads without slipping a millimetre from under the O ring!

With the inline lead version, the rig and hookbait can be placed inside the bag along with the free offerings without the fear of causing a death rig that can occur when tying up bags with PVA string or tape above the lead.

Setting the system up is simplicity in itself, in that before putting the lead onto the line or attachment, the O ring is placed over the thin end of the lead first, and the lead dropped into the bag. The O ring can then be placed over the neck of the bag, and positioned into the groove to secure. To coin a phrase from a Meerkat….. Simplez!!

The BDS leads are available in most popular sizes and replacement O rings are also available should you lose any. Anchor also do the BDS PVA Bags in two different types – standard and wet bait.

The wet bait PVA is thicker than the standard and can be used with damp particles such as towel dried Hemp, corn, tiger nuts, etc without exploding on the cast or during loading up.

UKMA are going to be using these a lot in the carp matches that we will be fishing during the course of this season, and hopefully will give us the edge over the other anglers fishing.

Anchor BDS Leads

All in all the BDS system is very impressive, and for the competitive specimen angler that cannot afford to waste a single second on the bank during a match, they are the perfect solution.
