200 Mile Trip Well Worth While

UKSA team member Alan Stagg has been out and about yet again, this time in search of big winter perch. /He took a big risk and made the two hour drive to a small commercial in Sussex.  Due to the weather it was always going to be a bit of a gamble and Alan explained that many of the small lakes he passed on his journey were frozen, so he didn’t hold up too much hope he would be able to fish at all.  Arriving at the venue he found it two thirds frozen and he had little choice to set up in one of the two swims that were free of ice.  He rigged up three rods with a 1oz running lead, 6lb Hydro Flo mainline, 14 inches of 5.5lb Mirage fluorocarbon as a hook length and a size 10 barbless Wide Gape Talon Tip hook.  Live baits would have been my preferred option but I couldn’t catch any so he opted for prawns on each rod that had been left to soak in Enterprise Worm and Shrimp flavour.

Alan explained “Unsurprisingly I didn’t have any action all day and then on dusk I received two quick bites in succession with the first fish weighed around 10oz, sport at last although small, this gave me hope. Alan Continued “a couple of minutes later I received a slow steady bite and on picking up the rod I knew straight away I had hooked a big fish. After slow but steady fight with the fish stayed deep all the way in, I was relieved when this hard fighting fish eventually came to the surface and slid into the net”

The fish weighed half an ounce under 4lbs and made the 200 mile round trip in less than perfect conditions very worthwhile! For the very productive Specialist angler.
