Drennan Float Fish Reel Line

Drennan have an impeccable reputation for supplying no-nonsense items for the angler and many of the range have been around for what seems like a lifetime with many anglers still purchasing the products.

One such product is the ever popular Drennan Float Fish reel line.

Float Fish is a neutral bouyancy reel line that is perfect for virtually every float angling situation that the pleasure or match angler will experience. If left untreated, straight off the spool the line will sit on the surface tension enabling instant connection between the angler and the float on the strike but if the tip of the rod is dipped, the line can be sunk just below the surface tension which helps on those days where the wind is not being kind to presentation. The line will sink deeper if treated with a line sinking treatment but still remain hanging in the upper layers.

During the tests, the stated diameters on the spools were exactly the same as the digital micrometer that UKMA use during line tests. The diameters may seem thick compared to hi-tec lines that anglers use a lot of nowadays, but as Float Fish is more of a traditional line, it is more resiliant to shocks than a prestretched hi-tec line is.

The stretch in the line was noticable but not as bad as some other reel lines that I have seen, which means that fishing a waggler at 40-50 yards should not give any problems with setting hooks.

The stated breaking strain was also spot on to what I experienced during my testing.

When spooling up the reels, there is very little line twist as the line goes on due to the slightly wider than most spool. This is something that Drennan have been doing for many years yet a lot of anglers think that using a larger wider diameter spool is something "new" from more fashionable brands.

Final Thoughts

I have used Drennan Float Fish almost exclusively for all of my float fishing work for at least 20 years now, and I will continue to use it until something comes to market that is significantly better for the same money. Float Fish may not be a vogue or fashionable item to admit to using, but a lot of anglers are using it exclusively. I cannot ever recall an occassion where Float Fish has let me down.

For stick or top & bottom rubber float fishing work, Float Fish is untouchable in my totally honest opinion.
