Gardner HydroFLO monofilament

£4.99 per spool

I got hold of a few spools of the new HydroFLO monofilament line from GardnerTackle, and, because I’m currently using Gardner HydroTUFF on my carp reels, I thought I’d try this on something else.... My smaller reels, which I use for lure angling and waggler fishing seemed ideal to top up with this ‘next generation’ line. The Gardner website states that this really is the very latest in co-polymer technology; I’m not an expert by any means when it comes to manufacturing of such products, but it certainly does feel very different to the ‘normal’ nylon polymer main lines currently available.

As usual, I soaked this for some time before spooling up, and I have to say that I was extremely surprised to find just how supple this particular product is. Many lines, although thoroughly soaked, still retain a certain amount of ‘springiness’, even after immersion in water; not so with HydroFLO. The closest comparisons I can make would be to infer that it has similar qualities to a very long human hair. I know that sounds strange, but HydroFLO is almost as flexible as some braids, but still maintains the associated anti tangle virtues of monofilament whilst maintaining the inherent stretch and softness which often isn’t apparent in some modern braids. Because of this, it sits superbly on the reel spool, fills well, doesn’t loop or spill forward over the lip and helps ensure casting is accurate and tangle free.

Linear strength is consistently good, failure occurring at well in excess of the stated breaking strains; even when knotted, the GT Nano Resin formula used in its construction preserves the integral durability above stated parameters and helps prevent lost fish. Other points of note include the incredible silky smooth finish to reduce friction when casting and playing fish, there is very little ‘memory’ even if the line has been unused for some time, and the diameter is so low (0.18-0.38mm) that it is virtually invisible in water! It’s also heavy enough to sink quickly and as it is so pliant, it quickly moulds to fit the contours of the lake bed.

I’ve been using it for a few weeks now, and I have to admit to being impressed although I do like Gardner main lines. HydroFLO is available in a variety of breaking strains from 4lbs (1.8kg) to 18lbs (8.2kg) and comes supplied on 300m spools in either low viz green or tru clear to suit any situation.
