Kryston Heavy Metal Extra
Anglers have been using putty for many years, and Kryston’s Heavy Metal is the first choice of many anglers, including ourselves at UKMA. When Dave Chiltern asked UKMA to take a look at the Heavy Metal Extra range of putty that is now available, we jumped at the chance to see how this differs from the original gear.
The original Heavy Metal putty was launched back in 1990 and it firmly established itself as being the only putty to use due to its incredible weight to mass density, meaning less could be used to balance down pop-ups, as well as allowing critical balancing. In 2006, Kryston suffered a big hit in that the suppliers of the putty were forced to cease trading. This left Kryston in a quandary that meant that to continue supplying the putty; they were forced into considerable investment into machinery to manufacture the material. This is not to mention the endless hours of trials and testing until the product was right. And right it is!!
Heavy Metal Extra was born! The original formulation of the Heavy Metal of old was fine tuned to give superior adhesion to hooklinks – both mono & braid, easier moulding of the material which softens up much easier between the fingers, and most importantly, the same price to the angler!
UKMA was very surprised at how much easier it was to apply compared to the old putty. It was a simple job of tearing a piece off the block, stretching it between our fingers to warm it up, and rolling it onto the hooklink. Once on the hooklink, the putty can be set by dunking into cold water. To remove & reuse, it is a simple task of rolling the putty on the line between thumb & forefinger, before pulling off the hooklink and replacing into the plastic tub supplied.
The Heavy Metal Extra is size for size, comparable in weight to lead, which means that it is probably the most dense putty on the market at this time.
Heavy Metal Extra is now available in 3 different colours to match up to the type of bottom that you are fishing over; Olive Green, Pebble Brown and Natural (the original colour).
All in all, after using this putty, we are now using the Heavy Metal Extra as a first choice over others that we were using. Top notch Kryston, and if this product can possibly be improved more, then please let us know!
