Swivel Leads

When people think of leads, only a couple of companies spring to mind immediately, but anglers are always looking for other options (not to say that there is anything wrong with leads on the market already).

When Mark Bendle at PureLake Baits mentioned that he was also making leads as well, we had to ask him to send some down for us to take a good look at.

When we opened up the box (albeit a heavy one!) in the office, the first thing that jumped out at us was the quality of the leads. The coating was flawless on the body of the lead with no lumps, bumps or burst air pockets. The other feature that was immediate was the use of a fine wire large eyed swivel fitted to the brass loop. The use of a large fine wire swivel eye enables easier ejection of the lead from a safety clip should it get snagged. We are all thinking about fish safety when it comes to our angling, but very few people think about the swivel on the lead and the difference that it can make to discharging.

Mark makes three styles of leads; Pear, Flat Pear & Distance. All the leads are available in camo green or speckled brown plastic coating. Mark also coats the leads in a "choddy" material and also gravel. The natural coated leads are perfect for fishing over the actual substrates that are used to coat the leads.

The standard plastic coated leads are available in various sizes dependant on the lead type up to 4oz and are all priced at 70p each! The "natural" coated leads are all priced at £1.30 each.

Final Thoughts

What else can be written about leads? The leads that we were sent down are at the same level as leads costing substantially more. Granted that you are not going to be able to pop down to your local tackle shop and pick up a few, but at the price which Mark sells tham for you can easily stock up on the sizes that you use most and keep a selection in the car in case you lose the ones carried. The "gravel" and "choddy" leads are reasonably smooth on the exterior compared to some others that I have seen on the market which mean that they will cast further due to being more aerodynamic, as well as minimising the amount of the coating coming off in your lead pouch.

All in all, these are impressive leads at a very impressive price.
