Advanced Carp Equipment "Razor Point" Hook Range

Mon 12 August 13

ACE have been around the industry now for several years and have firmly embedded themselves in the tackle shops with their comprehensive range of terminal tackle products and alarms. One product that was missing from the range, was hooks. When Terry Hearn joined the company, a range of hooks was placed in to development, and with Terry’s eye for detail and perfection, the “Razor Point” hooks took several years of stringent testing and tweaking before they were released to the general public. In other words, ACE wanted to make sure that they were right from the start.

UKCA recently received a box of the hooks from ACE and it was a mad scramble to who got what from the box (believe me, it was almost like a pro-wrestling “Royal Rumble” over some small pieces of bent and sharpened metal & I almost got thrown through the window in the process!!!). Injury avoided, we have taken a close look at the patterns in the “Razor Point” range and our first impressions are below.

Razor Point Hooks

Razor Point Hooks Range information

Boilie Beak Point BBP (Micro Barbed & Barbless)

Boilie break point

The Razorpoint Boilie Beak Point BBP hooks have been created by Terry Hearn to suit a huge array of applications, including presenting bottom or pop-up boilies, or snowman rigs. The curved beaked point is the best style to use when your rig may potentially rest on gravel – when the rig is retrieved there is far less chance of the hook point becoming damaged by stones. The barbless varient is probably the best type of hook to use where a barbless hook is required, as the pattern seems to stay in better than others without a barb.

The BBP is a short shank hook with a straight eye and forged shank.
Available in micro barbed in sizes 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 10, and in barbless sizes 6, 8 and 10. Sold in packs of 10 with a RRP of £4.49.

Short Curve Shank SCS (Micro Barbed & Barbless)

Short Curved Shank

One of the most popular hook patterns used by anglers, not just because it’s robust, ultra-sharp and incredibly strong – it’s the most versatile. Having both a short shank and a slight bend, this straight point carp hook also has a straight eye which means it can be used to create a wealth of different presentations. Whether you simply wish to gain a better hook hold when fishing standard hair-rigged bottom or pop-up boilies, or you want to give the Withy Pool rig, a snowman presentation or a KD rig a try, this is the perfect hook pattern to use.

Available in micro barbed sizes 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 10 & in barbles sizes 6,8 & 10. Sold in packs of 10 with a RRP of £ 4.49.

Medium Curve Shank MCS (Micro Barbed)

Medium Curved Shank

The Razorpoint Medium Curve Shank carp hooks are different to any other on the market, but that’s not to say they are not proven in the field. Designed over two years by the ACE team ofconsultants, these hooks combine short and long shank curved styles, with a slightly downturned eye, to ensure the hook turns as soon as the hook link is tightened. This provides an instant hook hold and coupled with the long and ultra-sharp point, instant penetration too. It’s suitable for a wide degree of presentations, including the popular 360 degree rig.

Available micro barbed, in sizes 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 10. Sold in packs of 10 with a RRP of £ 4.49

Stiff Rig Chod SRC

Stiff Rig Chod

The Razorpoint Stiff Rig Chod carp hooks have been purposely designed to perfectly compliment the increasingly popular chod rig style of fishing. The extra-long and ultra-sharp hook point provides perfect penetration without the need for sharpening so the fish will be pricked instantly under the weight of the leadcore leader. The combination of a medium-length shank and out-turned eye ensures the hook is ideally aligned at all times. This pattern will be extremely popular with anglers who fish with stiff or chod rigs.

Available in micro barbed, and in sizes 2, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8. Sold in packs of 10 with a RRP of £ 4.49.

Continental Xtra Strong CXS

Continental Xtra Strong CXS

Designed to be strong enough to take on the enormous carp living abroad in venues such as Rainbow Lake. These extra-strong carp hooks mean business and are perfect for use in the UK when fishing locked up near to snags. They are thicker than the usual wire gauge and are instantly much stronger. Even with the additional wire gauge used, the carp will find it difficult to see these ultra-powerful hooks as the non-glare PTFE finish is sure to camouflage the hook against the lake bed. The CXS have a short shank and wide gape, making them ideal for most hair-rigging situations.

Available in sizes 1, 2, 4, 6 and 8, in micro barbed only. Sold in packs of 10 with a RRP of £ 4.49.

Zig and Floater (Micro Barbed & Barbless)

Zig & Floater

This purposely-designed zig/floater hook has been created over a two-year period specifically for fishing the increasingly popular zig rig presentation and also for surface fishing situations. The Zig & Floater hook has a short shank and extremely wide gape, therefore ensuring the extra-long point is in the perfect position to give immediate penetration when a fish takes the bait. The eye is slightly out-turned meaning that the bait is always positioned perfectly in relation to the hook point meaning better presentation.

Available in sizes 8, 10 and 12 in both micro barbed and barbless. Sold in packs of 10 with a RRP of £ 4.49.

First Impressions

The whole team ad UKCA were eagerly waiting for these hooks to come in to the office, and we were not disappointed by them. The first thing you notice is that the small matchbox sized packaging has a removable insert which holds each individual hook in place to stop and chance of them rattling around together in transit, keeping the points perfect. To save space, ACE have made the insert double sided with 4 hooks on one side and 6 on the other. The boxes are also labelled on the edge so they can be placed in all popular tackle boxes taking up the least amount of room, as well as making easy identification of size and pattern. The hooks themselves, I tried to find fault with them, but couldn’t. Chosing various hooks from the array of patterns at random and checking the points under an eye loupe, each point was extremely sharp and perfect. No need here at all to be sitting with a file tyring to hone the points to an acceptable standard. The eyes are also fully closed so there is very little chance of the hooks letting you down here. The anti-glare treatment is discrete and doesn’t make the hook look thicker than it actually is.

It is very rare that the UKCA team get excited about a hook, but we’re literally gagging to get out on the bank to put these through their paces.
