When targeting big specimen barbel, bream, tench, chub and smaller predatory species including big perch, small pike and zander when lure fishing. As we have all found at one time or another, the standard triangular 40 inch specimen net can be in many cases over sized and even cumbersome, especially when stalking in tight, overgrown marginal areas, when more times than not, these big nets can a total hindrance. One excellent solution to this problem that has arrived in the UKMA office is the superb Specialist Net from ABU GARCIA, part of the Pure Fishing Empire. This excellent collapsible landing net has everything you’ll require when targeting that fish of a lifetime. So as per usual the UKMA team have recently took the Specialist net out on the bank to see how well it would perform in possibly the most demanding of angling situation, seeking out big river barbel on the tidal stretch of the river Trent near Newark, here’s what you get for your money and how it performed in an angling environment.

Vital Statistics

The Specialist Net from ABU GARCIA has everything you could look for from a landing net designed for big fish. It measures in at 30 inches (76.5cm) from spreader block to the front tensioning cord, 31.5 inches (80cm) between the side arms at the widest point and the mesh is an ample 26.5 inches (67.4cm) in depth. The key feature of this excellent landing net is the collapsible spreader block, this enable you to break the net down when in transit to the minimal size of 36 inches in length from the tip of the spreader block to the tip of the arms by 15.75 inches (40cm) across. To assemble the net for use is as simple as you like, all you have to do is pull the arms out until they slide into the spreader block and push them into the spreader bloc for a secure and solid frame. The Specialist Net incorporates a robust 5mm meshed olive green net that is in my opinion the perfect sized mesh for both hard flowing rivers and still waters alike. The Specialist Net 30 inch weighs in at only 14oz when totally dry, making it very easy to manoeuvre around when attached to a standard 6ft long specialist handle.

The “On the bank” field test

Whilst the UKMA team were out testing the Specialist Net 30’, we found that this sizable net easily swallowed a big double figure barbel with masses of room to spare. Even in the flood water conditions we were fishing in, the net was very easy to manoeuvre around in the strong flow and once the fish was over the net very easy to scoop through the hard flowing water. Whilst acting as a gilly or net boy for my angling companion for the session Andy Loble, I landing several of his 12 fish haul for him. Whilst doing this I found the net to performed perfectly scooping fish up to 11lbs 4oz with no fuss whatsoever. We found it to be very well balanced, strong and easy to control once under the water. So after landing numerous fish in very hard flowing water we can categorically tell you this is a very handy piece of kit that will add all specialist anglers when landing big fish.

Final Thoughts

The Specialist Net 30’ is also available in 24’ &28 options meaning there is a net to suit every specialist angling situation. After reviewing numerous nets of this type over the past few years, this one is by far my personal favourite, and to be totally honest you’ll do well to match this excellent landing nets performance, especially when I tell you they only cost £14.99 each, whish is outstanding value for money. UKMA highly recommend you have a look at one of the ABU GARCIA Specialist Net if you like top quality at an affordable price!
